Finding my motivation
PiNK 2021 Spring Issue (Japanese Text Only) サラ・ストーンズさんは、乳がん治療を経験後、思い切ってビジネスを立ち上げました。 サラさんは人事部で25年間働いた後、人々のモチベーションの元となるものを見つけて理解し向上させるためのサポートをする会社を始める決断をしました。 「自分のビジネスを持ちたいという思いは、いつもありました」と彼女は言います。「でも、勇気がありませんでした」 彼女は全く別の困難に直面したことで、勇気を出して踏み出す決心がついたのです。 最悪の場合を考えて 「本当に思いもよらない出来事でした」と2014年8月に乳がんと診断されたサラさんは言います。 診断の18ヵ月前、脳性麻痺を患っている彼女は、体の動きが悪くなったことで人工股関節置換手術を受けていました。 「手術後、生活を見直して健康的になりました。週に2回はジムに通っていました。当時は46歳でしたが、すべてが正しい方向に向かっていたと思います」 ある朝、サラさんはシャワーで胸にしこりを見つけました。すぐに病院から紹介状が出され、数週間後には乳がんだと診断されて化学療法が始まりました。 「私はとても前向きな人です。ですが、がんを患った知り合いは皆亡くなっています。最悪の場合を考えないことが困難でした」 素晴らしい支援 それまでの生活で脳性麻痺を患ってることを悩まなかったとサラさんは言います。 「くよくよせずに人生を歩んでいました。ですが、乳がんと診断されたときはさすがに、これをあまりにも不公平だと感じました。これ以上何を頑張れというの？という思いでした」 担当医が当初、サラさんに診断内容を直接伝えず、彼女の両親のみに伝えるというハプニングがありましたが、その後の病院からのサポートは素晴らしいものでした。髪の毛が抜けたときには、ウィッグを着けていない姿を写真に収めてフェイスブックに載せました。 「このようにして直接伝えていなかった人たちにシェアしました」と彼女は述べる。「人々からのメッセージや支援は素晴らしく、大きな違いをうみました」 人生を前向きに生きていく 治療が終盤に差し掛かったときに、サラさんは「Plain Sailing Motivation」という会社を設立する決心をしました。 「人生は短いです。だからこそ前向きに生きていたい。私はどんなときも人々の夢の実現をサポートをするのが好きでした」 乳がんの治療の過程でモチベーションが下がってしまった方に対して、治療前に好きだったことを思い出してほしい、とサラさんは言います。 「例えば、友人から元気をもらえるのであれば、家に遊びに来てもらったり、少し外出したりしても良いでしょう」 「自分を動機づけるものが同じでも、治療中は通常できていたことを実行するのがとても難しいときがあります。まずは、できることから始めてみてください」
