We examined the results.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;normal&#8221; color=&#8221;#515151&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">PiNK 2019 Spring pp.22-23<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]The results are clear: the majority of women (80%) who took Breast Cancer Care\u2019s survey are unhappy with their sex life after breast cancer. When also asked if they were happier before diagnosis, 81% said yes. Many women are being left in the dark and don\u2019t know what to expect \u2013 over two-thirds weren\u2019t told breast cancer treatment could affect their sex life.<\/p>\n<p>Of the women surveyed, 94% reported that a side effect of treatment had stopped them from having sex. Samia al Qadhi, Chief Executive of Breast Cancer Care, said: \u201cThese distressing figures paint a troubling picture of the everyday reality for countless women with breast cancer whose relationships and sex lives are side-lined. It is crucial that the taboo is broken. We must ensure that everyone has the opportunity to talk about sex, intimacy and altered body images to help get the support they need.\u201d<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Top five things that stopped women from having sex after treatment<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>1. Loss of libido<br \/>\n2. Too fatigued<br \/>\n3. Low self-esteem<br \/>\n4. Menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness<br \/>\n5. Feeling self-conscious about scars<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80% of women are unhappy about their sex life after breast cancer<\/li>\n<li>68% weren\u2019t told about the possible impact of breast cancer treatment on sex and intimacy by a healthcare professional<\/li>\n<li>76% didn\u2019t get the support they needed around sex and intimacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;33975&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; qode_css_animation=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u2018Our sex life ground to a halt\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Sharon Brooker, 44 from Peterborough, was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2013, just a year after getting married and having her third child.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Breast cancer completely changed the dynamic of our relationship to one of patient and carer,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysical changes like hair loss and scars meant I didn\u2019t think I was attractive anymore \u2013 I remember looking in the mirror and breaking down in tears as I didn\u2019t recognise myself. As a result, our sex life ground to a halt and two years after my diagnosis my husband and I separated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sharon was separated from her husband for nearly 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody mentioned breast cancer could affect my relationship or sex life. And while I\u2019m now back together with my husband, almost five years later it\u2019s still not easy. There are ongoing side effects \u2013 like awful vaginal dryness \u2013 which can make sex painful. I find it depressing and hard to talk to my husband about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sharon now supports women experiencing similar issues by volunteering with Breast Cancer Care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want anyone to go through what I went through,\u201d she says, \u201cso I let them know they\u2019re not alone \u2013 and I want everyone to know help is available.\u201d<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Get used to your body<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Seeing yourself after treatment might feel upsetting, but the more often you look at and feel your body, the less different it will seem. Figure out what feels good by exploring your body again.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sort out side effects<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Side effects of treatment, such as vaginal dryness, can stop you from feeling in the mood. Using vaginal lubricants and moisturisers can help relieve pain and dryness and may put you more at ease.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Communication is key<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Talking openly with your partner about your feelings can help you understand each other\u2019s needs. Too scary?
